I can't write coherently about this, so links...

Once again: If you aren't reading Jim C. Hines, why not??? I don’t get it. I don’t understand the fear. I don’t understand the greed. No health care system is or ever will be perfect, but we could do so much better. Instead, health insurance companies rake in billions in profits while an estimated “68 adults under age 65 die every day because they don’t have coverage.”

One of my favourite professional writers: Laura Anne Gilman. That could be you. That could be your best friend. That could be someone you've never met. That could be any of us - because there are people out there who think that taking care their neighbor is someone else's problem.

No. It's our responsibility. All of us, together. As a nation.

An author from the UK has many anecdotes about the more efficient (compare to US) performance of the National Health Service (NHS). I cannot imagine living under a system where I could not afford to be ill. I cannot imagine seeing my loved ones through two sets of cancer treatments whilst worrying about whether we might also lose the house. To me, this is barbaric.

And this is the item that started much of this discussion. A freelance writer is found dead in her house because she could not afford health insurance and her house and her only companion, her dog, at the same time. Melissa who, like most self-employed Americans, was responsible for acquiring and paying for her own health insurance - a luxury she simply couldn't afford. She knew she needed medical care, but feared a visit would result in a lengthy hospital stay that would "ruin her credit rating."
