"And that's the way it was."

Godspeed Mr. Cronkite.

I am to young to have watched him on the old TV news shows, but I have seen clips and his specials.
He truly was a voice of reason and sanity in a confused time. I wish we had someone of his caliber now.

You will be missed.

his voice will truly be missed

I'm going to re-watch the Apollo 13 ep of 'From the Earth to the Moon' tonight in memory (because Cronkite did NOT want to "hound" the astronauts' families in their time of worry. sadly, other networks did not agree.

I know that we have no voice as honest and plain-spoken as his anymore.

and I have to wonder if that is due in part to having to become network 'shills' in order to keep one's job?

I agree with your last question.
Another friend in a comment below says Jim Lehrer is good. Perhaps, but its not like he has come out and has become the trusted voice of anyone.

EVERYONE knew Cronkite was a journalist but of another caliber....I dont know....

He was also universally watched as well. Part of why CBS had such a strong stranglehold on being THE news network, at least until 80's and 90's. Maybe cable has chnaged the landscape that much - or the internet...

We DO have someone of his caliber!
"I wish we had someone of his caliber now."

Jim Lehrer should suit your wish...
