yeah...um, good movie, nice visuals....TMNT was better.
/me pleads for no rotten tomatoes thrown at her... :)
seriously tho, I got bored in the movie. It was lovely, and very nicely stylized, but I also have leafed thru most of the Graphic novel it was based on and most of the key and awesomely freaky frames were in there, they had good stuff to work with.
The plot holes were kinda large. And Leonidas was occasionally from Sparta, but often from Scotland or Ireland....it was interesting....
And after the pretty visuals wore off, the speechifying got to be a bit obnoxious and slightly boring. Also, all the death scenes with the horrific violence (while very very well done) became almost pat in their sameness. I think they could have cut out several of the scenes from the middle and the movie would have been much better (or at least hit me with more visceral feeling?)...
The plot was (obviously) a bit more mature than TMNT, but they both felt a little glossy, a little plastic-y. I expected it in the turtle movie, not so much in 300... I found it amusing that in the credits, there were actually location scouts and coordinators listed. I honestly have to wonder exactly what they did... (It was painfully obvious at moments that they were completely filmed on a stage with lots of green screen effects.)
Yeah, so 300, while very lovely, loses something to me in the translation...I think i was looking to be moved in a very gut wrenching visceral way (like Gladiator (one my faves)) and I wasn't and Im trying to pin down why. (I was drawn much more into TMNT, but i think there, I was in fan-girl mode and was willing to just play along in comic book land, It is easier to suspend your disbelief when the heroes are large turtles and the movie is not serious and you know that going into it...)
Bottom line. 300 has bigger battles, but Gladiator has a much more human story, and certain fight scenes in TMNT are better.
But, definetly worth the price of a ticket. :)
